FAQs

What skills do graduates need to work in product?

To get into product roles, grads need a fundamental understanding of the innovation process all great products go through, and navigating the problem space (user research, competitor research, reducing risk) and the solution space (product visioning, product iteration and experimentation). They also need to build the ‘double-diamond muscle’: using data effectively to draw conclusions and knowing how to lead cross-functional teams.

In our bootcamp we run through the innovation process and provide a whole section on how to land jobs in product roles, which provides 4 ways in. You can also read our guide on getting into product management here.

These skills are also increasingly relevant to strategy consulting companies, as they’re making more revenue from on-the-job, real-time digital transformation assignments that involve innovation and product optimisation projects.

What skills do students need to land jobs in big tech?

Tech is the second most popular career choice for business school graduates after consulting (see GMAC guide), whether that’s working at Google, Amazon, Meta, OpenAI or TikTok. That’s because of the great pay, great career mobility and opportunities to work on cutting-edge products we use every day. As the consulting world has changed (see above), companies also like hiring people who understand big tech and have worked in commercial tech roles.

There are lots of non-tech roles available at the likes of Google et al. (link to our Guide), from Sales, Account Management and Customer Success to Marketing and Product. The key skills these roles involve are understanding Big Tech Algorithms, Generative AI, Data Analytics, Design Thinking and Product Optimisation.

Thanks so much for the Bootcamp at LBS last night. I was thinking I'd stay for the first hour (due to a dinner conflict), but once the session started, I was absolutely glued to my seat the entire time and could not leave - truly the best presentation I've seen at LBS to date.

This bootcamp was the most insightful session on digital I had during my MBA. It was a great preparation for my recent position at Facebook and I would recommend it for people looking to get into big tech.

I enjoyed it a lot - I am a programmer and never ever knew any of what was taught. It was very hands-on and practical.
